Developing a visual identity for Codeword: Cabaret, an Auckland-based variety show celebrating fresh, local talent. The brand captures the show’s ever-changing nature, each performance reveals a secret lineup of comedy, drag, burlesque, and more. creating a playful, eclectic visual world that mirrors its spontaneous and theatrical spirit.

Codeword: Cabaret is a variety show created by Amy Arnold and Isabelle Cohen, based in the heart of Auckland’s Karangahape Road. Designing its visual identity was a collaboration that brought together my two passions; design and entertainment.
The creative direction draws from classic cabaret lights and typography of the late 19th century, reimagined for a modern, urban audience. The typeface strikes a balance between vintage glamour and contemporary boldness, capturing the show’s playful, theatrical spirit.
Launched in early 2024, the brand established a strong foundation that evolves with each new show. Every performance is unique, from its lineup and audience to Amy’s vibrant MC introductions, making each night its own experience. The marketing design mirrors this, adapting colours and tone to each theme.
For example, the anniversary show “Paper Moon” featured a soft, nostalgic palette, while “Firecracker”, coinciding with Guy Fawkes Week, exploded with bright yellows and golds.
With its foundations in place, Codeword: Cabaret continues to evolve in to living, expressive brand that grows with every curtain call.
